Gamma Band Activity in the Reticular Activation System: Mechanism for Preconscious Awareness

Dr. Garcia-Rill is a Professor in the Departments of Anatomy and Neurobiology and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). He earned his Ph.D. from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. After postdoctoral training at the University of California, Los Angeles, he joined the faculty at UAMS. His research has been continuously funded for over 20 years. His interests include the control of voluntary movement and locomotion, which involves the study of spinal cord injury as well as motor disorders such as Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases. He also does research on the control of arousal and sleep-wake cycles, which involves the study of disorders which manifest sleep dysregulation such as schizophrenia, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression bipolar disorder, narcolepsy, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and coma. He is also involved in space biology research on the effects of space motion sickness and the stress of long duration missions on cognitive function and arousal. He collaborates with faculty at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) School of Law on a series of law reviews focused on using science to make legal decisions.
