Neuroscience Discoveries and Clinical Practice

The InterProfessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) and the Center for Excellence in Neuroscience, in collaboration with the Michael T. Goulet Traumatic Brain Injury and Epilepsy Foundation, presents this year’s Spring Symposium. A case study has been developed with access to Michael’s complete medical record and will feature a panel of family members and care providers who will field questions from the InterProfessional audience during the Symposium.

THE CASE:

On February 15, 2003 as a result of a snowmobile accident, Michael Goulet endured a traumatic brain injury. He underwent brain surgery, and survived. Recovery included weeks in a coma, months of intensive rehabilitation, and years of further medical care. Subsequent to his recovery Michael developed a seizure disorder. He suffered his first grand mal seizure two years post recovery and had daily episodes of seizure activity from then on, despite continued care and medical treatment. Throughout his adolescence and young adulthood, Michael visited nursing homes, volunteered in soup kitchens, and became involved with ministry work. Enrolling at St. Joseph’s College as a psychology major, Michael’s hope was to continue on to graduate school so that he could make a difference in the lives of individuals with experiences like his. On October 6, 2010 Michael suffered his last grand mal seizure. He passed away from complications at Maine Medical Center on October 14. A preliminary video and paper case will be available to faculty and students on March 28 for preparation and use in the classroom.
