"I Have Come to Show You Death": Readings about 19th Century New England Lesbians and Dying
I Have Come to Show You Death is a collection of dramatic adaptations of works by four 19th century New England writers, all of whom appear to have been in Boston Marriages and whose writings celebrate intimacy between women.
Actors Jackie Oliveri, Vic Symonds, Julia Reddy, Kate Cyr, Kate Michaud and Carolyn Gage will read adaptations of three short stories that deal with the death of a lesbian life partner — “Two Friends” by Mary Wilkins Freeman, “Since I Died” by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, “There and Here” by Alice Brown — as well as a scene between two young lesbians adapted from the novel Deephaven by Sarah Orne Jewett.
