CECE Event [POSTPONED] – Ages and Stages: Mental Health Throughout the Life Cycle

Emotional, psychological, and social well-being affects how each of us think, feel, and act at every stage of life. For practitioner and patient alike, it can affect our ability to handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Through an interprofessional panel and interactive case, attendees will consider this important element of overall health that impacts everyone, regardless of gender, race, or age.

Stephanie Nichols, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCPP, FCCP, University of New England

Brandy Brown, LCSW (Pronouns: she, her, hers) is the Program Manager for The Gender Clinic Program at Maine Medical Partners/ The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.  She provides assessment, therapy, coordination of medical and mental health services, and program development within a multidisciplinary setting.  She is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry for Tufts University School of Medicine. Brandy received her BSW and MSW at the University of Southern Maine and is currently pursuing a DSW. 
Brandy is an advocate for improving LGBTQ+ healthcare, with a clinical focus on best practices in transgender health within pediatrics, as well as improving overall systemic competency and functionality within a large healthcare system.  Relevant memberships and affiliations include: WPATH, NASW (President of the Maine Board of Directors and Chair of the NASW- Maine Chapter LGBTQ Advocacy committee), MMC Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Steering Committee, MMC Equitable Care Workgroup, New England Transgender C.A.R.E. Consortium, & LGBTQ Youth Coalition (Maine).
 She has worked within different systems of care, including psychiatric inpatient hospitalization, residential settings with vulnerable populations including homeless youth, severe psychiatric disorders, veterans and neuro-rehabilitation.
 Brandy lives in Southern Maine where she prefers to stay close to the ocean with her family. She enjoys being outside at the beach or on a trail, hiking, camping, reading, and cooking.

Marilyn Gugliucci, MA, PhD, AGHEF, GSAF, AGSF, NAOMEF, is a Professor and the Director of Geriatrics Education and Research at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM). She is also the Founding Director of U-ExCEL (UNE~Exercise and Conditioning for Easier Living) Fitness/Wellness Program for older adults. Her Learning by Living Research Projects offers two tracks: (1) Learning by Living Nursing Home Immersion that "admits" medical students into nursing homes to live the life of an elder resident for 2-weeks; and (2) The 48 Hour Hospice Home Immersion that immerses pairs of medical students into an 18 bed inpatient acute care hospice home for 48 hours to conduct patient care, family support, and post-mortem care. Both projects are based on qualitative ethnographic/autobiographic research methods. She also conducts research on older adult function, falls, and proprioception.
Dr. Gugliucci is a Fellow of the National Association of Osteopathic Medical Educators (NAOME), the American Geriatrics Society (AGS), the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE), and the Maine Gerontological Society. Her expertise and passion in the field of aging has resulted in numerous publications and presentations nationally and internationally. She serves on national and state boards and committees, was the former Chair for the GSA Health Sciences Section (1700 members), now serves on the Society’s Board of Directors. Additionally, she served a two-year term as president for AGHE and while in this role she led the organization to vote in new progressive definitions for geriatrics and gerontology. Although not a nurse, she was a mentor for the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nurses/Hartford Foundation Geriatrics Nursing Leadership Academy. Dr. Gugliucci has been recognized with a number of awards both in osteopathic medicine and gerontology. Of note is the Association for Gerontology/Geriatrics in Higher Education (AGHE) Clark A. Tibbitts Award in 2018 for outstanding contributions to the advancement of gerontology and geriatrics as a field of study in institutions of higher education.
