MLK Celebration: Advocacy In Action
Join us in our annual celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as we acknowledge UNE’s advocacy work in action! UNE alum, Mark Montgomery ('03), will share his advocacy story and a call to action (live on Biddeford campus and livestreamed for Portland campus and online guests). This will be followed by an advocacy fair on Biddeford campus, featuring over 40 local and UNE-based organizations, and a postcard writing activity on Portland campus to hand write cards of encouragement for individuals being released from incarceration in Maine (the postcards, designed by UNE students, are included in wellness kits that UNE students assemble at the Maine Corrections Center in Windham; guidance and writing prompts are provided.) Both of the in-person events will include refreshments.
Alternatively, Portland campus students can sign up to participate in a read-in at a local elementary school during the MLK Celebration. A bagged lunch, transportation, and books will be provided. Contact Chris McCarry (cmccarry@une.edu) in Student Affairs for more information and to register.
If you need accommodations for any of these events, please contact Shannon Zlotkowski at szlotkowski@une.edu.
“Everybody can be great because anybody can serve…you only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
