UNE OT professor organizes "See, Do and Learn" at Waterboro Elementary School
University of New England Occupational Therapy Professor Jane O’Brien and Kara Beal, Education Technician at Waterboro Elementary School (WES), are organizing Science Night: See, Do, and Learn for WES students on Tuesday, February 24, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Massabesic Middle School.
The science activities kick off with a presentation by Mr. and Mrs. Fish at a school assembly. Principal Mark Petersen and Vice Principal Richard Knox are involved with preparations for Science Night.
Many UNE faculty and students from the Pharmacology, Medical Biology, Dental Hygiene and Occupational Therapy Departments, as well as the UNE Chemistry Club, will be participating. The elementary students can participate in hands-on presentations such as the lung lab, looking into a heart, what’s in your mouth, the human brain, and more.
A variety of community members are also participating, including an orthopedic surgeon and UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine graduate, a veterinarian, a senior forecaster for the National Weather Station, a robots software developer, a deputy from the Maine Sheriff’s Department, and a teacher who trained with Christa McAuliffe in the NASA Teacher in Space program. Some of their presentations will include: name that bone, veterinary science, how to predict the weather, robots today, crime investigation and sink and float.
Teachers from Massabesic Middle and High Schools are also involved and will address topics ranging from Lego robotics to animal vision to asteroids.
All students and their parents will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of demonstrations and hands-on science experiments. There will be prize drawings throughout the event, including books and Children’s Museum of Portland tickets.
