Center of Excellence in the Neurosciences Capstone Event features neurosurgeon Dr. Lee Thibodeau Aug. 10th

Noted Maine neurosurgeon and entrepreneur Dr. Lee Thibodeau will provide the keynote address, "A Maine Boy's Journey in Medicine and Entrepreneurism," at the capstone event at the UNE Center for Excellence in Neurosciences at noon on Wednesday, August 10 on UNE's Biddeford Campus.

Seven interns who have worked all summer with Maine-based companies and UNE faculty to learn about drug discovery and development, translational biomedical research, entrepreneurism and community service will provide brief presentations of their work.  In addition, several UNE students will present updates on their original research projects that have the potential to be commercialized through start-up companies and partnerships with industry.

The interns are Hannah Clarke of Falmouth, Hannah Doss of Cape Elizabeth, Taylor Piers of Falmouth, Danielle Rafferty of Kennebunk, Allison Saunders of Saco, Evan Shuris of Kennebunk, and Mark St. John of South Portland.

UNE Provost Jack Williams and Director of the UNE Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences Ed Bilksy will provide opening remarks. The program was developed under the leadership of Bilsky, a professor of pharmacology in the UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine and co-founder of two Maine-based companies that are developing treatments for chronic pain and addiction. Bilsky also works closely with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, including several that are also Maine-based.

The event, which is free and open to the public, runs from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on UNE's Biddeford Campus (view the program schedule).  RSVPs are suggested at cen@une.edu
