Newspaper column lauds 2 members of women's cross country team for sportsmanship
Sports writer Ron Chimelis published a column in the Republican (Springfield, Mass) Jan. 10, 2011 on UNE student athlete Lindsay Forrette and her teammate Jess Partlow, who stopped during the women's ECAC Division III cross country championships at Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I. to assist a competitor who had fallen face down in the dirt on the trail.
"Good things happen to good people, as Lindsay Forrette found out recently." Chimelis wrote. "The competitive aspect quickly took a back seat to making sure the stricken runner, who the UNE runners did not know, was revived and received proper attention." The two women were commended by Rudy Keeling, the ECAC commissioner, who wrote to UNE Athletic Director Kimberly Allen, explaining that other runners had passed the distressed Salve Regina competitor. "You should be extremely proud of your student-athletes for their selfless act of sportsmanship and for putting the well-being of a fellow competitor above themselves," wrote Keeling.
