Anisfield-Wolf Awards Ceremony honoring David Smith and others to be streamed live Thursday
A ceremony honoring David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., and three other 2012 Anisfield-Wolf Award winners Thursday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. will be streamed live by the Cleveland Foundation on two websites www.anisfield-wolf.org and www.ideastream.org
The program is also being filmed by BookTV for broadcast at a later date.
Smith, UNE associate professor of philosophy, was named winner of the 77th Annual Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Nonfiction for his 2011 book Less Than Human: Why We Demean, Enslave, and Exterminate Others.
The ceremony, hosted by the Cleveland Foundation, will be emceed by Jury Chair Henry Louis Gates Jr., the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African-American Research at Harvard University.
Other recipients of this year's award are: Esi Edugyan, Half-Blood Blues: A Novel, Fiction; David Blight, American Oracle: The Civil War in the Civil Rights Era, Nonfiction; Wole Soyinka, Lifetime Achievement.
