Doctor of physical therapy students celebrate National Fall Prevention Awareness Day
On September 23, 2013, doctor of physical therapy (DPT) students celebrated "National Fall Prevention Awareness Day" by offering fall risk screenings to the members of the local community. This service learning event was developed in collaboration with Jim Cavanaugh, PT, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, and the Medically Oriented Gym in South Portland, Maine.
The event provided a unique opportunity for students nearing graduation (DPT Class of 2014) to mentor students just beginning their physical therapy training (DPT Class of 2016).
Annually drawing attention to the problem of falls and fall-related injuries is a primary function of the National Council on Aging.
