UNE medical school 'joining forces' on Veterans’ issues November 11
University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine is honoring Veteran’s Day on November 11, 2013, by focusing educational activities on the physical and psychological health issues faced by military service members, veterans and their families.
First- and second-year medical students will participate in sessions related to service member and veteran health and healing.
Some of the sessions and topics include:
- An introduction to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance abuse presented by Dr. Stephen Wyatt of Middlesex Hospital, CT
- An overview of traumatic brain injury by Janet Keith, OTR/L, CCM, of NeuroRestorative in Braintree, MA
- Making the transition seamless: interaction between the VA and the primary care provider by Dr. James Doherty, Togus VA
- Treatment of polytrauma the osteopathic way by Dr. Stephen Goldbas and Dr. Bill Bograkos, advisor, Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons
- An opportunity to watch “A Marine’s Guide to Fishing,” a poignant movie about an injured veteran’s return to his hometown, starring Maine veteran Matthew Pennington. Read about the movie and Pennington.
The future physicians will gain a better understanding of the military culture that impacts patients, as well as psychological health and the medical concerns specific to military personnel and their families.
