David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., UNE professor of philosophy, has a post titled "Is Being Human more like being a Weed than it is Like Being Water?" on the Stanford University Philosophy Talk website. Although the blog requires a subscription, you can read the post as a pdf.

Smith is the author of Less Than Human: Why We Demean, Enslave, and Exterminate Others, which was winner of the Cleveland Foundation's 77th Annual Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for non-fiction.
