James Sulikowski interviewed by Maine morning show in advance of "Shark Week"
With the Discovery Channel’s 2014 edition of “Shark Week” set to begin this Sunday, James Sulikowski, Ph.D., UNE professor of Marine Science, stopped by the 94.9 WHOM studios on August 7, to discuss the increasing number of sharks in the Gulf of Maine.
In an interview with 94.9 Morning Show hosts Sandra and Teddy—the very individuals who dubbed Sulikowski “Dr. Shark” in a previous interview—Sulikowski attributed the rebirth of the shark population in Maine waters to the abundant seal population and to changing environmental conditions. He predicted that in the next five years we will see a rise in white sharks in the Gulf of Maine as they increase their range in search of additional food sources.
Sulikowski also discussed the expanding career opportunities available to UNE marine science students in the areas of conservation, aquaculture and sustainable fisheries.
