Anouar Majid urges Congress to pass Iran deal in 'Bangor Daily News' op-ed
Anouar Majid, Ph.D., vice president for Global Affairs and director of the Center for Global Humanities, encouraged Congress to pass the Iran nuclear agreement in an opinion piece for the Bangor Daily News.
According to Majid, with Iran agreeing to the terms of the agreement, the United States has taken an important step in transforming the Middle East. He points to Iran’s contributions in world history and its scientific and technological advancements. “By any measure, Iran, aside from Israel and Turkey, is the natural superpower of the broader Middle East; it behooves us, therefore, to get it on our side and help us contain the dark forces of Sunni terrorism, like al Qaeda or the Islamic State,” stated Majid.
In his article, Majid wrote that the United States is to blame for the current political situation in Iran because the U.S. thwarted Iran’s democracy in the 1950s. He stated that those mistakes could not be undone overnight but that President Obama’s deal is the best bet we have. “If, as a result of this agreement, Iran is integrated into the world economy, one could reasonably expect that most Iranians would lose interest in fighting the West or trying to undermine Israel,” wrote Majid.
