UNE Dental Careers Exploration Camp featured in ‘Bangor Daily News’
UNE’s efforts to spark early interest in dental care with the Dental Careers Exploration Camp for high school students was covered by Bangor Daily News this week.
The news outlet described the work students were engaging in at the clinic, including taking dental impressions, practicing suturing and working with dental mannequins. Three peer mentors helped to staff the camp, all of whom enjoyed coaching and mentoring this year's campers and plan to apply to UNE's College of Dental Medicine in the future.
Lionel Vachon, D.D.S., associate clinical professor and group practice leader for the College of Dental Medicine was highlighted for his role in leading campers through each dental activity. In addition, UNE's second and third-year dental students provided significant instruction in all aspects of the dental camp experience and shared their stories of their own career aspirations.
The article also included a quote from Collyn Baeder, B.A., dental camp coordinator and coordinator for UNE’s School of Community and Population Health,, who expressed her enthusiasm for the camp’s potential impact on the next generation of dental health care providers.
The Dental Careers Exploration Camp has been held at UNE annually since 2010. It is free of cost for the campers and their families thanks to generous donations from Time Warner Cable, TD Bank Charitable Foundation and the Maine Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Network.
