UNE students volunteer as medical personnel at Maine Marathon
Twenty students from the University of New England volunteered as medical personnel at the Maine Marathon on October 4, 2015 in Portland, Maine. The student volunteers brought a range of medical experience to the race as either medical students in the College of Osteopathic Medicine or EMT certified undergraduate students. They provided support in the medical tent or on the field, assisting the more than 2,600 marathon and half marathon participants.
Ria Isacke, D.O. '12 served as co-assistant medical director for the event, which depends on volunteers. She turned to her alma mater at UNE to recruit necessary, skilled people to serve in critical roles during the race.
Medical volunteers work at the primary medical tent at the start and finish line, at one of three additional aid stations found on the course or riding bicycles along the way. “I must say it was a record year for volunteers, so we were very appreciative to have the UNE COM students involved,” said Isacke.
