A state divided: UNE’s Jeanne Hey offers analysis of Maine voters ahead of first presidential debate

Jeanne Hey

WCSH interviewed Jeanne Hey, Ph.D., dean of the University of New England’s College of Arts and Sciences, about the presidential race after a poll was released showing that Maine voters are split between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

Hey, whose background is in political science, explained that Trump appeals to voters in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District while Clinton appeals more strongly to those in the 1st District.

"Mainers, even though we disagree with each other a lot on politics, we really have a strong Maine identity so to be the first state to put forward a divided electoral vote would give us a place in history that I'm not sure is really consistent with our sense of our united Maine identity," said Hey.
