An article by Dean of University Admissions Scott Steinberg on how to get the best recommendation letters for college was published on October 3, 2016, by the Bangor Daily News.

Steinberg advises college applicants to refer to the admissions instructions for each college to which they are applying to verify how many recommendations are required and to check guidelines regarding from whom recommendations should come. He also suggests that before obtaining additional recommendations, students should contact colleges to find out if extra letters are helpful or even accepted.

Steinberg counsels students, whenever possible, to seek recommendations from people whom they know in multiple contexts, such as a teacher who also served as an advisor for an extracurricular activity. Additionally, he reminds students to make their requests for letters of recommendation well in advance of the deadlines.

Finally, Steinberg suggests that students waive their rights to access recommendation letters if given the option.
