UNE Physical Therapy professor Eileen Ricci receives pediatric specialist recertification
Eileen Ricci, P.T., D.P.T., M.S., P.C.S., associate clinical professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of New England, was recently recertified as a clinical specialist in pediatric physical therapy by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties Board (ABPTS). Ricci is one of only six physical therapists certified in pediatrics in the State of Maine.
The ABPTS of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) awards certificates to physical therapists meeting approved requirements. To obtain board certification, candidates must submit evidence of required clinical practice in a specialty area, and successfully complete a rigorous written examination, which demonstrates specialized knowledge and advanced clinical proficiency in a specialty area of physical therapy practice. Recertification requires not only continued active clinical practice, but also documented continuing education and participating in pediatric related advanced level activities such as research or teaching.
Ricci teaches courses in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at UNE, preparing students to provide excellent physical therapy services to children with physical and developmental disabilities. During her seven years as a faculty member, she has also maintained a pediatric clinical caseload- a requirement for specialist recertification. Professor Ricci specializes in the assessment and treatment of children with physical disabilities in the birth to three age group, as well as school aged children. She is currently involved in research projects investigating new assessments for earlier identification of cerebral palsy and the interprofessional education of D.P.T. students.
