UNE political scientist quoted in ‘Portland Press Herald’ article about Mainers’ votes in the presidential election
Brian Duff, Ph.D., associate professor and chair in the Department of Political Science, was interviewed for a September 25 article in the Portland Press Herald, titled “For the first time, it looks like Maine’s electoral votes will be split.”
The article predicts that Maine’s four electoral votes in the upcoming presidential election will be split between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump, which would mark the first time in history that the state’s votes are divided. Clinton is leading in the southern 1st District, while Trump is favored in the northern 2nd District.
Duff theorized that the 2nd District support of Trump echoes that region’s support of Maine Governor Paul LePage – another outspoken Republican. Duff said of LePage, “He is one of the most unusual governors in the nation and now it seems they are going to really change their habits in voting in the presidential election and it tells you something is happening in politics that is really resonating up there. It’s reflecting what we’ve noticed elsewhere, which is that white people without a college education, especially men, are really having a positive reaction to the Trump campaign.”
