UNE’s Anouar Majid gives LA Times interview about Dutch populist politician
Anouar Majid, Ph.D., University of New England vice president of Communications and Global Affairs, offered his expertise on Islam and global politics in an article in the Los Angeles Times. The story focused on Dutch politician Geert Wilders, a member of the far-right Party for Freedom, which has recently gained popularity in The Netherlands.
A Dutch court recently convicted Wilders of inciting discrimination toward Moroccans at a campaign appearance in March 2014. Majid explained that far-right politicians and political parties are gaining ground and winning elections in many countries. “This attitude – and you find echoes of it in the recent election in the United States – comes from a sense that people are losing control of their culture, their tradition and their heritage,” he said.
