UNE’s first artist-in-residence featured in ‘Down East’ magazine
Kim Bernard, M.F.A., UNE’s inaugural artist-in-residence in the College of Arts and Sciences, was featured in Down East magazine’s November in an article titled “Her Art is Everywhere.”
Bernard, a former artist-in-residence at Harvard, was appointed by UNE President Danielle Ripich this fall to create science inspired works of art and to assist faculty and students who wish to integrate arts into their curriculum and studies, respectively. She has launched several projects at the University thus far, including a henna tattoo project, an amphibious tiny house project, a sewing workshop, an indigo dying session, an asphalt art lesson and multiple “art invasion” pranks on campus.
The Down East article contains a dialogue that occurred between Bernard and student Grayson Szczepaniak (Marine Biology, ’17) while the latter received a henna tattoo.
“I want students to have engaging, memorable experiences and to create, design, and involve their own interests to learn something new – that’s my mission,” Bernard said.
Bernard will give a public lecture about her work and science-inspired art on December 1, 5-7 p.m. in the St. Francis Room of the Jack Ketchum Library on the Biddeford Campus.
