'Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences' publishes article by UNE’s Rick Peterson on urban field study
Rick Peterson, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Environmental Studies, recently published an article in the Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences, titled “Taking it to the city: urban-placed pedagogies in Detroit and Roxbury.”
In the article, Peterson argues that undergraduate environmental studies programs favor field-based experiential learning in non-built environments, while urban areas, which hold great value as learning spaces, go largely underutilized.
He discusses both the benefits and challenges of including urban field studies by pointing to his personal experiences teaching two different courses, both of which involved collaboration with nonprofit organizations: the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative in Boston’s Roxbury and Detroit Summer, which engages youth and elders in social and environmental revitalization in Detroit’s inner city.
