UNE College of Dental Medicine featured in ‘Portland Press Herald’ business article

UNE College of Dental Medicine graduates

The inaugural graduating class at the UNE College of Dental Medicine (UNE CDM) has been highlighted in the Portland Press Herald’s Business section. The piece focuses on the CDM’s commitment to improving access to care in Maine and how graduates are helping to fill the state’s dentist shortage.

In the 2017 graduating class, sixty-two students, including 24 from Maine, were awarded the Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. Eleven of these students have already signed on to practice in Maine, and several others intend to return after completing residency and specialty programs.

Nationally, the average number of dentists per 100,000 population is 61; Maine’s average is 50. With just the 11 new dentists who have already pledged to remain in Maine, the average ticks up to 52 dentists per 100,000 population.
