UNE Portland Campus Art Gallery presents Nancy Hemenway Barton exhibition
The University of New England Art Gallery on the Portland Campus presents AHEAD OF HER TIME: The Life and Work of Nancy Hemenway Barton, a major retrospective of one of the 20th century’s most creative and multi-faceted artists. The exhibition features Hemenway Barton’s early watercolors, portraits and oils as well as her textile designs, wall hangings and three-dimensional art forms. Also included are examples of her journals, poetry, videos, art materials and memorabilia.
Curated by Anne B. Zill and members of the Barton family, the exhibition will commence with an Opening Reception, scheduled for September 28, 5 – 7 p.m., and will remain on display until December 20.
Honored with the UNE Deborah Morton Award in 1979, Hemenway Barton has showed artworks in exhibitions around the world, including one-person shows at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and in Edinburgh and Botswana.
During the run of this show, there will be a “trail” of other institutions featuring one or more of Nancy Hemenway Barton’s works. They include Bates College, The Farnsworth Museum of Art, the Portland Museum of Art, Maine College of Art, Wheaton College, the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and Maine Fiberarts.
On October 14, at 4 p.m. there will be a related panel discussion with artists and art professionals in the UNE Art Gallery, Portland Campus.
