UNE’s Christian Teter discusses the health effects of marijuana on MPBN’s ‘Maine Calling’
As marijuana for recreational use is now legal in Maine, Christian Teter, Pharm.D., BCPP, associate professor of Psychopharmacology, was tapped as an expert to discuss the science behind the drug on MPBN’s ‘Maine Calling.’
Teter, who gives presentations to schools on the topic of marijuana’s health effects, stressed that it has a different impact on adolescents versus adults. “We’re using it medically for a variety of conditions in adults. But the efficacy of that data can’t just be translated to children and adolescents, because their brains are still developing.”
He continued by explaining the ways that cannabis affects the brain, saying that the formation of memories can be inhibited while under the influence.
Teter also noted that there are over 60 different types of cannabinoids, a diverse class of chemical compounds, in the cannabis plant. Different types of cannabinoids can have different effects on symptoms, he noted, but scientists are still working to decipher exactly how they are linked.
