UNE Art Gallery’s ‘Photos of Children’ exhibit gets shining review from ‘Sun Journal’
UNE’s current Art Gallery exhibition, Photos of Children/Photos of Youth: Period and Contemporary Photographs, on the Portland Campus, was the focus of a glowing review published by the Sun Journal on March 10.
According to the article, the exhibition provides “an excellent selection” of 100 photographs that “remind us … that children are our most important natural resource.”
The exhibit, curated by Professor Emeritus Stephen Halpert, showcases both period and contemporary photos selected from the University’s archives as well as loaned pieces. While the photographs focus on children from all over the globe, most of the images have ties to Maine. Many were taken by Maine artists working today.
Anne Zill, gallery manager, was interviewed by the Sun Journal. “It has been an honor to work with Halpert. He is an outstanding curator,” she said.
The review mentions several of the exhibit’s photographs by name as standouts, including “Adult and Child in Israel” by Judy Glickman Lauder, “La Salle Street at Amsterdam” by Todd Webb, “Refugee Camp” by Robert Pennington, “Children at the Merrill” by Diane Hudson, “Peak’s Island” by Arthur Fink, “Two girls by the Truck” by Jack Montgomery, “Eagle Island” by Jon Edwards and “Miner’s Children” by Berenice Abbott.
“The whole place is like a small gem that sparkles with creativity,” the review says of the Art Gallery.
