UNE Vice President of Admissions Scott Steinberg weighs in on wait list debate in ‘Inside Higher Ed’ article
Scott Steinberg, vice president of University Admissions, was interviewed for an article about college and university waiting lists that was published by Inside Higher Ed on April 2.
The article, “Are Waiting Lists Out of Control?” was spurred by debate that followed a comment posted by a private college counselor on the email list of the National Association for College Admission Counseling. The counselor expressed her opinion that by wait-listing so many students (a growing custom), colleges and universities are treating applicants cruelly by giving them a false sense of hope.
The article provides examples of colleges and universities that wait-list far more applicants than the total enrollment spots per class, exposing just how slim the odds are of a wait-listed student being accepted.
The University of New England was singled out as one exception to this trend. Steinberg shared that the accelerated nursing undergraduate program at UNE received 180 applicants for 48 spots. The University offered 26 applicants spots on the waiting list, and seven accepted. He also reported that the College of Osteopathic Medicine typically offers waiting list spots to 200 to 250 candidates and admits approximately 60 of them.
