Less Than Human: Why We Demean, Enslave and Exterminate Others by David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., was recently named as one of the top five books on cruelty and evil on fivebooks.com, a website that interviews authors about their top five picks for books about a given topic. Paul Bloom, a Yale psychologist, was the author who identified Smith’s book as among his top five about this issue.

Bloom says of Less Than Human, “Part of what Smith argues is that it is very difficult for most of us to kill or torture another person, and that we need to get away from the other person’s humanity in order to do that. Without the distance of dehumanization, real evil would be impossible for most of us. So dehumanization is a way of overcoming those inhibitions, and that’s the path to genocide.”
