Local printmaker Sissy Buck exhibits lithographs at UNE’s Biddeford Campus Center
An exhibition of artwork by local printmaker and book artist Sissy Buck will be on display at the University of New England’s Biddeford Campus Center from August 30 to September 30. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 7, from 5 to 7 p.m.
The exhibition features handwriting from the artist’s mother’s recipes, lists, family letters, and notes, as well as Buck’s sketchbook drawings. Drawn to patterns found in nature and the expressive gesture of line in drawing and handwriting, Buck uses paper lithography with direct drawing and painting on a plexiglass plate to create the monotypes, all hand-pulled on a large etching press. Her printing process alters the legibility of the familiar scribbles, slants and cursive loops until they are undecipherable and emerge as abstract calligraphic designs.
Buck is the past co-president of the Peregrine Press, a printmaking cooperative in Portland. First introduced to printmaking at Wheaton College, where she received her B.A. in art history with a minor in studio art, she continued her studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Montserrat College of Art and at the DeCordova Museum School, both in Massachusetts.
After moving to Maine, Buck renewed her love of book arts through courses at the Maine College of Art, the University of Southern Maine (USM), and the USM Kate Cheney Chappell ’83 Center for Book Arts.
She is a member of the Monotype Guild of New England and is on the board of the USM Kate Cheney Chappell ’83 Center for Book Arts, where she also facilitates a book arts critique group. Her work has been widely exhibited and is in many collections.
Both the exhibit and the opening reception are free and open to the public. UNE’s Campus Center is located at 11 Hills Beach Road, Biddeford, Maine. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, contact Diane Noble or phone (207-284-6394).
