UNE Center for Global Humanities presents “Promise at Dawn” – A Film about Romain Gary, an Exceptional French Novelist
In addition to being a World War II aviator, diplomat, filmmaker, and husband to controversial movie star Jean Seberg, Romain Gary was one of the most prolific writers of the 20th century.
The story of his remarkable life is the subject of a new film, titled Promise at Dawn, which will be screened for the first time in Maine at the University of New England Center for Global Humanities on February 10 at 6:00 p.m. at the WCHP Lecture Hall in Parker Pavilion on the UNE Portland Campus. The very next day, on February 11 at 6:00 p.m., the film will be screened at UNE’s Biddeford Campus at the Alfond Center for Health Sciences in Room 205.
The Portland Campus screening is a ticketed event, with tickets available at https://www.une.edu/calendar/2020/promise-dawn-a-film-about-romain-gary-exceptional-french-novelist.
The film, which was reviewed by the New York Times in September 2019, has been regaled by critics and featured by media outlets around the world. Based on Gary’s best-selling autobiographical novel of the same title, it chronicles Gary’s difficult childhood in Poland, his adolescence in Nice, his career in the air force in Africa during World War II, and his life beyond. As the film progresses, viewers come to understand the extent to which his literary success can be attributed to his living such a rich and varied life and to the enduring love of his mother, Nina.
These will be the second and third events of the Spring 2020 season at the Center for Global Humanities, where events are always free, open to the public, and streamed online.
