Dr. Juan Bugueno earned his dental degree at the University of Concepcion in his native country, Chile. He graduated cum laude, worked as a general dentist for five years, and then completed an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency. In 2000, after working for five years as an oral surgeon in Chile, he and his family had the opportunity to come to the United States, and he received advanced training in oral and maxillofacial surgery in Florida, which he completed in 2003. He attained licensure in Texas in 2004 and started providing dental care for the underserved of El Paso.
In 2011, he enrolled in the Oral Medicine Residency Program at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine. During his residency, he won the 2013 “Lester Burket Research Award” and a case presentation at the American Academy of Oral Medicine meeting the same year. He also completed an Oral Biology Master Degree Program at UPenn. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine and volunteers as a Commission on Dental Accreditation site visitor for Oral Medicine. Academic positions include Clinical Assistant Professor, Externship Coordinator and Preceptor, Texas A&M University College of Dentistry, Dallas, TX; Adjunct Faculty, The University of Texas School of Dentistry, Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences, Houston, TX; Assistant Professor/Director Geriatric, Department of Diagnostic Sciences and Oral Medicine, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, College of Dentistry, Memphis, TN. Most recently, Dr. Bugueno served as an Associate Professor at the Department of Diagnostic Sciences, School of Dentistry, West Virginia University where he collaborated in administrative, clinical, and teaching activities. With the start of the pandemic, he was appointed by the Dean to lead the COVID-19 Committee. Additionally, he was a member of the Cancer, Admission, and Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Committees. He is part of the executive committee of the American Association of Oral Medicine, and actively participates in clinical research activities.
Dr. Bugueno enjoys outdoor activities with his family: his wife, Mercedes, and her son, Nicholas who is a college student at The University of Tennessee.
