Brady Fleurent '19
Setting New Records for his Team and his Family
Brady Fleurent ’19 is a force to be reckoned with as part of UNE’s Nor'easter Men’s Hockey team. Majoring in Sports Management with minors in Business and Coaching, he aspires to having a career in hockey after his graduation, preferably by joining a pro team.
As a first generation student, Brady explained how fortunate he has been to receive the Hearst Foundation Scholarship. Knowing how much work his brothers, Trevor ‘17 and Tyler Fleurent ‘13, did in order to attend UNE helped him understand that college would be an expensive and potentially difficult option. At the same time, he knew what he wanted to do with his future. “Affording a college education is difficult as I am paying for school myself. I could have gone to a less expensive college to play hockey, but I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to be at UNE, so I figured I would work extra hard to find a way to pay for school.”
One of Brady’s favorite moments from the past year was when UNE hosted the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championship. By the time the team had reached the ice to warm up, two hours before the game, the building had been sold out and a line was still winding its way to back to the dorms! “There was definitely a pretty cool feeling knowing that the students had your back like that,” Brady explained.
Brady continues to be thankful for the amazing times he has had on and off the ice, along with all the help he had along the way that made it all possible. In particular, he thanks the Hearst Foundation for providing him with a scholarship, as he states, “I am going to have to start paying back loans next year, so receiving the Hearst Foundation Scholarship means a lot for me. Thank you to the Hearst Foundation for this wonderful scholarship which has helped me very much.”
