Before Enrolling

Before enrolling at the University of New England the Office of Admissions will provide guidance on transfer credits. Usually, UNE accepts transfer credits from higher education institutions that are regionally accredited, Advanced Placement (AP) courses, College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) credits, and accredited military training programs. However, it is important to note that specific program constraints may apply.

After Enrolling

Upon admission to UNE, the credentials evaluator will provide you and your academic advisor with a transfer evaluation. This evaluation depends on the receipt of official transcripts from your previous educational institutions, which it is your responsibility to request.

Once you are a matriculated student, you must obtain approval before taking courses at other institutions if you want them to count towards your UNE degree. This requires completing the Transfer Credit Approval form (PDF) before enrolling in external courses. After you receive your final grades, you must ensure that your official transcript is sent to the UNE Registrar’s Office to complete the processing of your transfer credits.

In most cases, transfer credits from external institutions must have a grade of “C-” or higher to be eligible for transfer to UNE. Some programs may have stricter grade requirements and time limitations for the transfer of coursework. Detailed information about these criteria can be found on the specific catalog page for your program of study.

Greater Portland Alliance of Colleges and Universities

The University of New England is a Greater Portland Alliance of Colleges and Universities (GPACU) member. This six-member alliance between higher education institutions in the Portland area provides cross-registration opportunities for eligible students. Registration is subject to the host institution's availability, requirements, and policies.

The other participating institutions are the University of Southern Maine, Southern Maine Community College, Maine College of Art, and Saint Joseph’s College.

GPACU Guidelines

To enroll in a GPACU class at another intuition, a UNE student must:

  1. Complete the Transfer Credit Approval Form (PDF) and the GPACU Cross-Registration Form (PDF) and submit it to the Registrar’s Office for processing.
  2. Request a course that is eligible for cross-registration.
  3. Be in Good Academic Standing.
  4. Participate only after completion of their first semester of college.
  5. Be registered for credits at UNE equal to or exceeding the number of credits you intend to take through GPACU.

Please note: UNE is willing to have you take GPACU courses at a host institution if their add/drop period is still open. Please refer to the individual host institution’s academic calendar.

To enroll in a GPACU class at UNE, a non-UNE student must:

  1. Meet the “matriculated student” definition as defined by the student’s home college/university.
  2. Submit the GPACU Cross Registration Form (PDF) to your institution’s Registrar’s office before UNE’s add/drop period has ended. Your registrar will submit the appropriate paperwork to our University once your school approves your GPACU request.
    1. Please refer to our Academic Calendar for our published deadlines.
  3. Request a course that is eligible for cross-registration.
  4. Notify the Registrar’s Office of both institutions if you intend to withdraw from the course before the withdrawal deadline.
  5. Meet any course prerequisites or registration requirements set by UNE.

All courses are eligible for cross-registration except:

  • Non-credit courses and non-degree program courses
  • ROTC or Military Courses
  • Graduate or Professional Courses
  • Any courses outside of the regular academic year (e.g., summer, winter, inter-session)
  • Online Courses
  • UNE students only: Unable to register for courses currently offered at UNE.
    • The only exception is if the course is needed to graduate and the course offered at UNE is full or has a time conflict with another course needed for graduation.
