Get Involved with UNE North

Nurturing our planet demands time, effort, and unwavering commitment. It also necessitates that our institutions enable individuals to act responsibly and equip them with the necessary knowledge and tools to effect meaningful change. As a UNE student, you have the power to be a change maker. UNE North provides opportunities for you to engage in sustainability efforts, both locally and globally.

Sustainability Fellows

The Summer Sustainability Fellowship program pairs current UNE students and recent graduates with local municipal, business, and nonprofit community partners to collaborate on specifically designed sustainability projects. UNE fellows are mentored by dedicated individuals from the host organization and advised by a team at UNE. Over ten weeks, fellows complete a full-time project, earning a stipend and up to three internship credits while receiving mentorship and participating in professional development events.

A Profound Global Impact

UNE creates a lasting global impact by offering transformative study abroad experiences through our North Atlantic and Arctic travel programs.

As an undergraduate student, you can explore Iceland through our semester abroad program at the University of Akureyri, where majestic mountains will surround you at the head of Iceland’s longest fjord. Alternatively, you can immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Reykjavík, Iceland’s largest city, through a semester at the University of Iceland. These unique programs enrich your academic experiences and prepare you to be active, informed global citizens about the North Atlantic.

Starting in Fall 2025, you can embark on an adventure in Norway or Finland while earning your degree through UNE’s North2North exchange program. As a UNE student, you can study abroad and apply for scholarship funds for a semester or a year through UNE’s membership with the University of the Arctic.

Additionally, each semester, there are faculty-led short-term travel courses that have a sustainability element for undergraduate and graduate students and may take you to places in the North Atlantic, like Iceland.

Conferences and Workshops

As a UNE student, you have the opportunity to leverage the resources at UNE North and participate in various conferences and workshops. In the past, students have been engaged with 42˚N: The New England Forum for Arctic Collaborations, a workshop that combines academic expertise in Arctic research across New England with researchers, stakeholders, and external partners concerned with environmental, economic, and social impacts.
